The Kiru Farmers Cooperative Society owns and operates the Kamagogo Coffee Factory, one of four such enterprises that are managed by the co-op. The farmers who make up this coalition have been steadily investing in the factory's infrastructure each year, buying grading tables, improved drying beds, and advanced de-pulping equipment. The factory even operates a water soaking pit, used to purify the water from the coffee processing and prevent them from contaminating freshwater sources - not a common sight in coffee processing stations in the region.
Most farmers in Kenya do not grow coffee as their sole crop, but rather alongside various other subsistence farming crops. It is therefore crucial for them to work together as part of a cooperative in order for their coffee to be processed and handled in ways that would allow it to reach international markets. By banding together, the members of the Kiru Farmers Cooperative Society have been able to build an impressive system of coffee production, while minimizing risks for producers.
Kamagogo's robust infrastructure results in reliably great tasting coffees, year in and year out - and this year is no exception. With delicate sweet and bright berry flavours, and a gentle, tea-like body, this lot is a real treat.
