Minova, a town plagued by its once dark history of war, today looks to escape its past. Using coffee produc-tion to forge a path for economic success and social stability, Eba & Wally, founders of Societe Maitea, hope to make a difference to the local community, as well as to demonstrate the quality of Kivu province's coffee.

Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is one of Africa's richest countries in terms of natural resources. Yet it is one of the continent's poorest. Early colonial rule was exploitative and punishing — one of the harshest in Africa — and was focused almost entirely on the extraction of the country's wealth. This history has left a legacy that DRC has yet to shake. Colonialists were drawn to the Congo for the plentiful rubber and rich gold deposits. Their stay left a trail of bodies, social upheaval and teeny poor road map for the future. Coffee production, however, could forge a path for economic success and social stability. Beginning in the 2010s, cooperatives began to set up, some funded by NGOs and state development agencies and others bolstered by Fairtrade and other certified networks. These factors and international attention on the situation have enabled DRC coffee to make a name for itself.

Located to the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) provenience of South Kivu, dose to the Rwandan border, Minova sits at the head

of Kabuno Bay. Since 2014, Little by little, the economy of the region has begun to grow; thanks to the help of international partners, who came looking to purchase coffee. Unfortunately, these initial purchases were bought at very low prices. This tenant problems such as malnutrition, health and schooling, continued to go untreated. In 2018, in came Societe Maitea owners, Eba & Wally. Eba Murua (Biologist and Primatologist) and Wally Mahindu (enthusiast and all-round coffee expert) are worldng tirelessly to rid the Kivu region of its tarnished repute, as well as improve the social development of its people. With the help of their exceptionally hard-working team, this year (2019), Societe Maitea and the local cooperative, have been able to produce their first fully washed Arabica lot from their washing station located in Minova. The coffee cherries come from local smallholders with farms less then 1 hectares and featuring varieties such as Blue Mountain (60%) and Kivu Bourbon (40%). After the wet-process the coffee has been slowly dried on raised African beds.

Our coffees taste the best when extracted with water of the proper hardness. range. In order to highlight the best flavour of our roasts we recommend having 5 to 10 days of resting period after roasting, but consume within two weeks of opening. Enjoy!
